Nanotube ribbon could make space elevator a reality

What's 100,000 kilometers long, as thin as a piece of paper, and able to carry over twenty tons of cargo and passengers into space? The space elevator, of course.

Nanotechnology breakthroughs have its developers expecting to have it up and running within twenty-five years. Hear Liftport president Michael Laine talk to Earth & Sky about making this nanotube ribbon to the stars a reality. (photo Liftport Group)

Ok, this nanotube sounds impressive, but what practical use will it have?

Few people will buy this news because it is incredibly unbelievable. It can have many usages but they are not yet prepared to launch.

Like what? Who needs and elevator to outer space? I’m having trouble getting to my flat on the 10th floor, I’d be happy to have my elevator working, forget about the Sci-Fi stuff!
