Laser Nano-Scissors

Filed in archive Medical by Dr. Joseph Kim on July 29, 2008

How accurate can a laser cut? Dr. Adela Ben-Yakar, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at The University of Texas at Austin developed a way to use pulse laser to cut nano-sized nerve axons. Forget calling this a microscalpel. This is a nanoscalpel. By using this nanoscalpel, medical researchers may lead to a better understanding of nerve Regenerationlinks. Dr. Ben-Yakar developed a femtolaser system with the help of Stanford electrical engineers. What a great example of scientific collaboration! Read more about the research here: http://www.engr.utexas.edu/spotlights/2008/microscalpel/
