Biotechnology, nuclear power, toxic chemicals, electromagnetic radiation -- each of these technological hazards has a universally recognized warning symbol associated with it. So why not nanotechnology -- the world's most powerful (and potentially dangerous) technology?
Critics will be quick to answer that question with the fact that nanotechnology hasn't demonstrated any of the harmful effects that warrant a warning symbol like the ones associated with nuclear power and toxic chemicals. But ETC may have the last laugh with a symbol that will both focus and exacerbate public fears.
On the other hand, the whole thing may backfire on them when people realize that so many naturally occurring substances contain nanoparticles that labeling will be impossible.

This is a good competition. Thanks for the link. I’ll try to design one.

Why do they need a Nano-Hazard symbol as long as nanotechnology is not considered hazardous, not to mention it is very, very small, don't those people have bigger issues to worry about?

Just wondering if my smiley face has a chance?
Did you know that in every 6 gallon of Anti Bacterial nano-silver paint there is only 2 grams of nano-particles? In other words you have to swallow the complete wall coatings of your 3 bedroom appartment and you still 10 fold under any limit. Not that there is a limit for Silver anyway.
Say NO to Nanosilver - Save the bacteria.

Harry, I really like your smiley face, and to be honest with you, I'd totally choose it as the international Nano-Hazard Symbol, maybe just a little upgraded: I'll make it look like a fractal, you know, a smiley face made out of millions of smaller smiley faces, made out of other even smaller smileys.
